About Camp
Amid the tall pins of Prescott, Ariz., there is a place called Camp Rainbow.
For one week each summer, youngsters gather to do all the fun things kids do at
summer camp: swim, fish, hike, ride horseback, make new friends, build lasting
friendships, develop a sense of independence and self-confidence and share
once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Our Roots
In 1985, the Phoenix Chapter of United Order True Sisters #58 in partnership
with the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children's Hospital
established a camp in Prescott for children of Arizona who have or have had
cancer. Hundreds of kids have come to Camp Rainbow over the years. In fact,
since 1985, Camp Rainbow has grown from 27children to more than 130. Each
"Rainbow Kid" attends camp at no cost to the family.
The Details
Camp Rainbow is held one week each August at Friendly Pines Camp in Prescott.
The camp welcomes children, ages 7 to 18, who have or have had cancer regardless
of race, color, sex or religion.
Camp activities include swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, canoeing,
performing arts, archery, rollerskating, fishing, an overnight camping trip and
much more! It's a week filled with laughter, new experiences and new friends.
The children are supervised by a staff of highly experienced, caring professionals.
The entire staff is dedicated to the welfare and happiness of the children and to
providing the best supervision and care possible. All Camp Rainbow counselors are
volunteers of college age or older, selected by means of a written application,
personal interview and verification of personal references. Many are former childhood
cancer patients themselves and are therefore particularly sensitive to the special
needs of the children. The on-site medical personnel include pediatric oncology
physicians, nurses, and counselors - all on staff at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
All costs for Camp Rainbow are funded by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders
at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Camp Rainbow is accredited by the American Camping Association, which upholds
the highest standards for organized camping. Camp Rainbow is also a member of
Children's Oncology Camping Association International.
Our Funding
Funding for Camp Rainbow is dependent upon fund-raising by the Center for Cancer
and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children's Hospital and donations from private and corporate
sponsors. The funds provide for the cost of food and housing for the campers and
staff for one week, all materials and activities, special outings and events for
the campers. All donations are tax-deductible and all funds collected for Camp
Rainbow are allocated to camp expenses only.
The ultimate goal of Camp Rainbow is to give children who have or have had
cancer the opportunity to enjoy a fun and meaningful camp experience.
Until such time as cancer is eradicated, Camp Rainbow will offer the opportunity
for these children to experience the joys and friendships found only in
surroundings dedicated to their needs and aspirations.
